Firebirds burn Aces

The Wellington Firebirds have beaten the Auckland Aces by two runs in their T20 domestic cricket match on Eden Park's outer oval.

Wellington's Michael Pollard top scored with 74 runs off 36 deliveries.

The Firebirds captain Hamish Marshall won the toss and elected to bat before the opener was caught for one with his number two and three batsmen both failing to score above 10.

Enter the wicket-keeper Tom Blundell who smashed 61 from 41 in a 116 run stand with Pollard that formed the backbone of Wellington's 182 run total.

In reply, the Auckland skipper Rob Nichol scored 68 from 52 but lost his wicket in the 20th over with his side needing seven runs from four balls.

The victory was Wellington's second in a row and second of the season, but the Firebirds are still rooted to the bottom of the table.

Auckland are on top with with four wins from six games.
