Chasing 342 for victory, the tourists were all out for 264 in the 45th over.

Look back at match commentary here.

The Black Caps won the toss and elected to bat first on Hagley Oval, with opening batsman Latham top-scoring with 137.

Playing in front of his home crowd, the left-hander faced 121 balls, hitting 11 boundaries - including four sixes - in a man-of-the-match performance.

He put together a 158-run partnership with number six batsman Colin Munro (87), who also posted his highest score in one-day internationals.

The controlled century by Latham was the first by a New Zealander in a one-day international at the ground.

The 24-year-old also combined in a 48-run partnership with captain Kane Williamson (31) and 55 runs with the returning Neil Broom (22) to give New Zealand the foundation they needed before he and Munro built their imposing total.

Latham brought up his second one-day century when he pulled a short Taskin Ahmed delivery onto the bank for his third six, moving from 95 to 101 in 100 balls.

He quickly surpassed his previous highest score of 110 not out against Zimbabwe before he was dismissed in the 48th over.

The hosts scored 341 for seven in fifty overs, but in reply Bangladesh were unable to keep pace with the required run rate and lost too many wickets to ever threaten the Black Caps' total.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan top-scored for Bangladesh, with 59 from 54 balls, and was also the tourists' best bowler - taking three for 69.

James Neesham and Lockie Ferguson each took three wickets for New Zealand, with Neesham conceeding 36 runs from seven overs and Ferguson 54 from nine.

Latham's opening partner Martin Guptill was the first batsman out, caught at mid-off in the sixth over for 15.

Williamson grafted 31 off 36 before being caught behind after fiddling with a wide delivery in the fifteenth over.

Neil Broom looked solid in his first international innings for three years, before being trapped LBW for 22 in the 25th over by Shakib.

Shakib's second victim was Jimmy Neesham, dismissed in the same manner as Broom in the 29th over for 12.

Munro went out swinging wildly, caught in the 47th over off Shakib by Taskin Ahmed, who also clean-bowled the recalled Luke Ronchi for 5.

Tim Southee (7) and Mitchell Santner (8) saw out the New Zealand innings, guiding the home side to the equal highest ODI total on Hagley Oval.

The second game of the three-match series is in Nelson on Thursday, with the third at the same venue two days later.
