The rookie Black Caps batsman Glenn Phillips says his callup to the New Zealand Twenty20 cricket side came out the blue but he's looking forward to taking on the country of his birth South Africa.

The 20 year old Auckland batsman's will replace the injured Martin Guptill in the Black Caps side for the one off T20 game against South Africa at Eden Park on Friday evening.

"I got the call about 7.40pm last night from (selector) Gavin Larsen - biggest call of my life so far, just can't believe it ..very much out of the blue," he said.

Phillips, who moved here from South Africa with his family when he was five, says he doesn't feel the weight of expectation.

"I've just been told to go out there and see the ball hit the ball - do what I do best."

Phillips says in the one innings he opened the batting for Auckland with Guptill he learnt a lot.

"The one thing I learnt from opening with him is 'take my time'. You can always catch up later on...time is never an issue," said Phillips.

Phillips has previously played for New Zealand under-19 and has put his name on the auction list for the auction from Carribean Twenty20 league later this year.
