Highlanders and Waratahs to play for special trophy

Results may count for little in pre-season Super rugby matches but the Highlanders and the New South Wales will being playing for some newly minted silverware tonight in Sydney.

Higlanders coach Tony Brown has his returning All Blacks available for the first time as the two sides contest the Sir Henry Braddon Cup.

The trophy has been commissioned by New South Wales as Braddon played for Otago in 1883, New Zealand in 1884 and New South Wales between 1888 and 1892.

Braddon who played at fullback and on the wing is listed as All Black No.2 and in 1920 became the first All Black to be knighted.

He had a commercial and political career in Australia, working for Dalgetys and representing Australia as Commonwealth Commissioner in the United States.

He was appointed a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1917 and was an elected member of that body from 1934 to 1940.
