A strong run has given defending champion Cameron Brown a record ninth Ironman New Zealand title in Taupo, with a total time of 8 hours 21 minutes and 52 seconds.

He beat fellow Aucklander 2008 World Champion Terenzo Bozzone, who lead after the swim and bike stages, by 4 minute 38 seconds.

Kieran Doe, also of Auckland, was third.

In the women's event, Jo Lawn has claimed her seventh Taupo title, with a course record time of 9 hours, 14 minutes and 35 seconds.

The Auckland woman took the lead from Christchurch's Gina Crawford in the bike stage, and Crawford finished the race 14 minutes behind.

American Kim Loeffler was a close third.
