A hat trick was the last thing on White Ferns bowler Anna Peterson's mind but her final over heroics helped New Zealand to an eight run victory over Australia in a rain affected Twenty20 in Geelong yesterday.

The White Ferns set Australia a target of 70 to win off 13 overs and the Southern Stars appeared on track to chase it down, needing just 11 off the final over.

That was before Peterson stepped up and produced a match-winning performance, claiming a hat-trick, just the sixth in women's T20 internationals.

"It wasn't really on my mind if I'm perfectly honest," Peterson said.

"I just wanted to make sure that we won the game. I just knew that I had to bowl full and straight and to be fair the fielders did the other half of the job."

Peterson praised captain Suzie Bates' guidance in the final over.

"She was really supportive and set the field according to the batter which meant that I didn't have to think, I just had to bowl which was great.

"Her support was great and Amy's (Satterthwaite) as well to help with tactics."

The three match series is now tied one all, the decider is in Adelaide on Wednesday.
