Carter was reportedly driving with blood alcohol concentration nearly twice the legal limit in Paris last week.

He apologised on Facebook, saying it was an error in judgement.

In a post today, Carter said he and his management had had to "front up" to sponsors.

He said Land Rover "who for good reason have zero tolerance towards drink driving, have ended their relationship with me".

"I understand this completely and am disappointed I put them in this position," he added.

Carter was stopped last Wednesday by police in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, L'Equipe newspaper and other French media reported.

Dan Carter has been dropped as a brand ambassador by Land Rover.

He was not carrying his driver's licence and had a blood alcohol concentration of .98 grams per litre when the limit was .5 grams per litre, they said.

Carter, back in New Zealand on holiday, apologised for his "massive error of judgement" and said he would let the police and court processes run their course and would face the consequences.

The penalty for drink-driving in France ranges from an on-the-spot fine to two years in prison.
