Mannering out for season opener

The New Zealand Warriors captain Simon Mannering will miss the side's National Rugby League season-opening clash against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday due to injury.

The 23-year-old was due to make his debut as captain but the coaching staff decided not to risk him as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Warriors coach Ivan Cleary says Mannering is close to being fully fit and they're hoping he'll be able to play next week.

Michael Luck, who stood in for Steve Price during some games last year, will lead the side on Sunday.

It will also be Luck's 99th match for the Warriors.
