The hopes of former Kiwis international and Brisbane playmaker Benji Marshall returning to the NRL are on hold after he suffered a fractured wrist.

Marshall suffered the injury playing on the weekend in the Queensland Cup for the Broncos' feeder club Redcliffe.

The 32-year-old , who is desperate for more NRL game time since his departure from St George Illawarra, had been in impressive form, scoring a try and setting up three others in their 28-20 win.

There was at least some positive news with Marshall unlikely to require surgery.

"It is really unlucky for it to happen like this but that is football," Marshall told the Broncos website.

"All I can do now is concentrate on it getting better and keep training for a return as soon as I am able."

Marshall, who left the Dragons at the end of last season, played his first match as a Bronco against Melbourne in round three when he came off the bench in the second half.
