He replaces the West Indian Andre Russell, who is currently serving out a one-year ban for a doping-code violation.

De Grandhomme, a medium-pace bowler and a lower-order batsman, made his debut for New Zealand in February 2012.

He took 6 for 41 in his first Test against Pakistan in November last year.

He has a T20 strike rate of 171.

De Grandhomme joins Trent Boult at the Knight Riders.

The Knight Riders open their IPL campaign against the Gujarat Lions in Rajkot later this week.

Corey Anderson, Matt Henry, Martin Guptill, Lockie Ferguson, Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson, Mitchell McClenaghan and Adam Milne are the other New Zealanders scheduled to play in the IPL.
