Crusaders captain and All Black lock Sam Whitelock has been cited by the super rugby judiciary for retaliation during their Super Rugby win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein yesterday.

Whitelock was sin binned after striking the Cheetahs prop Charles Marais late in the 48-21 victory.

Whitelock will appear before a Judicial Hearing tonight.

He was not the only Crusaders player forced from the field.

All Blacks skipper Kieran Read left the field just before half-time with a broken thumb and has been operated in South Africa and now likely to be out for six weeks.

He will return home in the next day or so.
