The Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd says his assistant John Plumtree would be an ideal fit as a defensive coach for the All Blacks.

New Zealand Rugby is about to advertise for a replacement for Wayne Smith who will leave the All Blacks after the Rugby Championship.

Plumtree is considered a likely candidate for the job.

Boyd says the succession plan is for Plumtree to take over from him at the Hurricanes when he decides to stand down.

Boyd says he's not sure if Plumtree would be interested in the national position.

"I think he would do a good job, he's more than capable of doing that job, will he go, your guess is as good as mine."

"Like other people when they map out their career path, John will make a decision on whether he wants to stay in the Hurricanes organisation and take over from me when it's my time to go or whether he'll go to the All Blacks and work in that environment."

Boyd says he's not interested in the All Blacks position as defence "isn't his gig".
