It seems the 11-year old son of New Zealand's America's Cup winning skipper Russell Coutts has learnt plenty from his dad.

Mattias Coutts has won the under-13 title in the O'Pen Bic class at the world champs in Italy.

Representing Auckland's Manly Yacht Club, Coutts junior was in dominant early from, winning the first four races in the 12 race series.

In an interview on the event's website Mattias described his father as "quite a good" coach.

"He taught me all I know about sailing, and every day I learn new things from him," he said.

Coutts senior said he was "surprised" by his son's performances.

"He's doing great, but it's not just a matter of results, there's also learning and the enjoyment of the whole thing. Because when kids this age learn a lot about the sport they will develop a passion for it and fall in love with it."

It was a strong regatta for New Zealand with Sean Herbert winning the under-17 category with victory in five races.
