Lawyers for Peru football captain Paolo Guerrero are trying to have his suspension for doping lifted so he can play in the second leg of the world cup qualifier against New Zealand.

The 33-year-old striker was provisionally suspended by FIFA after failing a doping test but the Brazilian website Globoesporte is reporting lawyers have asked FIFA's disciplinary committee to lift the suspension.

If that bid fails the report says he will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

Guerrero is Peru's all-time top scorer, scored six goals in the qualifying stage to lead his country to the intercontinental playoff.
