A controversial goal from Didier Drogba has helped Chelsea to a crucial 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford to leapfrog the champions at the top of the English Premier League football table.

Goals from Joe Cole after 20 minutes and a second from substitute Drogba in the 79th - in an offside position when he collected the ball before scoring - put Chelsea 2-0 ahead before substitute Federico Macheda scored two minutes later to give United hope of salvaging at least a point.

Chelsea move up to 74 points, two ahead of United with both teams having five matches to play.

A late Nicklas Bendtner header in the fourth minute of added time saw Arsenal maintain their Premier League title challenge over 10-man Wolves in London.

Manchester City climbed into fourth place with a crushing 6-1 win at strugglers Burnley after Tottenham lost 3-1 at Sunderland.

Ashley Young's goal was the difference as Aston Villa won 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers.

Doomed Portsmouth played a scoreless draw on the south coast against Ryan Nelsen's Blackburn Rovers.

Stoke City beat Hull 2-0 at home.
