On the eve of the Masters golf tournament, the chairman of the Augusta National club has castigated Tiger Woods for failing to live up to expectations as a role model.

In an unexpected departure from southern reserve, Billy Payne said the world number one would be judged in the future by the sincerity of his efforts to change after admitting to a string of extra marital affairs.

However the 18 time Major winner Jack Nicklaus has welcomed Woods back.

He's the favourite to win a fifth Green Jacket, although he hasn't played for five months since the start of a series of lurid revelations about his private life..

Nicklaus says despite the break Woods remains as driven as ever to add to his 14 Majors.
