Lack of basics costly in Silver Ferns loss to England

The Silver Ferns assistant coach Yvette McCausland-Durie says the basics just went out the window in the last quarter as the New Zealanders were beaten by England in their opening game of the Netball Quad Series in London.

The Silver Ferns were beaten 64-57 in extra time.

The New Zealanders were down by one goal at half time, but appeared set for the victory when they held a six goal advantage after three-quarters.

However the homeside finished stronger, while the Ferns conceded a number of turnovers to allow England to draw level at 49-all at the end of regulation time.

New Zealand then completely faded during the two periods of extra time to give England a deserved win.

The result comes off four straight losses to Australia in October.

McCausland-Durie says little mistakes cost them today.

"The stress rising, the crowd getting louder and we should have been able to manage that, but just our personal errors are just the pieces that are doing the damage and so that's a massive one."

"Just the basics need to be executed, absorbing the pressure and keeping things really simple."

Australia beat South Africa 54-50 in the other game.

The series now heads to Johannesburg with the Silver Ferns to play South Africa on Friday morning.
