The New Zealand skeleton racer Rhys Thornbury has had a horror final run in the medal round at the Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang.

Thornbury went into the fourth and final round in sixth equal spot but lost his run up just as he was about to launch himself onto the skeleton.

He eventually posted a time of 52.14 seconds - nearly a second a half slower than his best run of the competition to finish 14th.

"The worst thing that could happen in our sport happened to me today. I was in such good position too, I'm devastated," he said.

South Korea's Yun Sung-bin won the gold medal becoming the first athlete from outside Europe and North America to win an Olympic sliding medal.

It was also a tough day for New Zealand skier Alice Robinson who has failed to complete her opening run and is effectively out of contention in the women's slalom.
