Golf's national strokeplay champion Caroline Bon was the first major casualty of the women's matchplay championships at Hastings.

After comfortably accounting for Heather Lavery of Rotorua) in the first round, the tall Northlander was beaten by Japanese visitor Chihiro Ikeda 3 and 2.

The men's championship on the same course produced only one major upsetwhen Ben Campbell from Masterton, was beaten on the last green by unheralded Canterbury representative Shaun Jones.

The men's strokeplay champion, 18-year-old Brad Kendall, had to play three extra holes to earn his two wins as did Aucklander Ryan Fox.

The two Australians in the field, defending champion Matt Jager and Jin Jeong, will meet this morning in the quarter-finals.

Last year's young women's finalists, 15-year-old Cecilia Cho and 12-year-old Lydia Ko, both moved ahead without problems, with Cho accounting for former strokeplay champion Zoe Brake 6 and 5.
