It's possible that Phil Mickelson could replace Tiger Woods as world golf number one by next Monday.

Woods has held top spot in the rankings for 258 weeks, despite two extended breaks during that time, but if Mickelson wins this week's Players Championship in Florida and Woods finishes out of the top five, the Masters champion would take over as number one.

Meanwhile two youngsters could be set to make an impact at the Players - the 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa, who shot a final round 58 at the weekend in Japan to win his seventh career title, and Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who's risen to ninth in the world rankings after shooting a course record 62 yesterday to win the PGA tour's Quail Hollow championship.

McIroy has just celebrated his 21st birthday.
