Storm directors to mount legal challenge over salary cap penalties

Independent directors of the Melbourne Storm rugby league club have advised owners News Limited they're considering legal action against the National Rugby League over salary cap penalties.

News Limited though says it doesn't support the move and won't fund it.

The Storm's independent chairman, Rob Moodie, originally agreed with News Ltd that legal action wasn't an option, but has now says independent directors want the NRL to review the heavy penalties and are considering legal action if necessary.

The Storm was stripped of two premierships and will finish last this season as they're not allowed to accrue competition points.

However, News Ltd chairman and chief executive John Hartigan says they disagree with the views of the independent directors and believes a legal challenge will only further damage the club.
