Making just her second attempt of the competition on Sunday (NZ time), the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist stalled during her jump and fell backwards before landing heavily on her feet.

McCartney walked away from the incident, but was seen with ice on her left ankle and soon decided not to continue.

Reports suggested the 21-year-old left the venue on crutches.

Also the silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April, McCartney had been in top form and edging closer to the five-metre mark leading into the penultimate round on the Diamond League calendar.

She has achieved three personal bests, taking her top mark to 4.95 metres last month.

McCartney suffered the injury in Birmingham attempting to clear just 4.20 metres.
