One of the home favourites at the French Tennis Open, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, has narrowly avoided the first major upset at Roland Garros.
Tsonga, the eighth seed, was taken to five sets by the unseeded German Daniel Brands, winning the deciding set 7-5.
