The Southern Steel remain in contention for a play-off spot in the trans-Tasman netball competition after beating the Melbourne Vixens 52-39 in Dunedin.

A near-perfect first quarter set the platform for the Steel to claim outright fourth on the points table. It was the Vixen's fifth straight loss.

In defence Leana de Bruin and Te Huinga-Reo Selby Rickit picked off Melbourne ball, while Megan Dehn and Daneka Wipiiti dominated the Steel shooting circle.

Meanwhile in Adelaide, the Thunderbirds have gone second after a 58-34 victory over the Canterbury Tactix.

Tonight the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic host the Queensland Firebirds and the West Coast Fever host the Central Pulse.
