WC security staff strike over pay

6:06 am on 15 June 2010

South African police have taken control of security for this morning's World Cup match in Cape Town between Italy and Paraguay after stewards walked off the job in a row over pay.

The match is due to start at 6.30 this morning and FIFA say it'll go ahead on schedule.

The strike in Cape Town followed a similar protest after yesterday's Germany-Australia match in Durban, where police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to break up hundreds of stadium staff protesting about their wages.
