The rugby league convert Sonny Bill Williams says he received much better financial offers but he's decided to join Canterbury and the Crusaders in large part due to the presence of All Blacks first five Dan Carter.

Williams says he had offers from Hawkes Bay, North Harbour and Counties-Manukau but believes the Canterbury setup will give him the best chance to break into the All Blacks.

Williams' preferred position is second five eight and says at French club Toulon he learnt a lot from not only former All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga, but also from playing outside England first five Jonny Wilkinson.

He believes the same will be the case playing alongside Carter.
