The former world champion cyclist Alison Shanks says the squad named to compete in October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi is the strongest New Zealand has ever had.

Shanks heads a list of 26 riders, which includes road stars Greg Henderson, Hayden Roulston and the track pursuit team which includes five world championship medalists.

The women's road team is centred on Danish-born Linda Villumsen and Beijing Olympian Cath Cheatley, while the 2009 world pursuit champion Shanks headlines the women's track team.

Shanks says the squad is the strongest ever named to represent New Zealand at a Commonwealth Games.
