Southland hold on to Ranfurly Shield

The Southland rugby side has held onto the Ranfurly Shield after a 16-12 victory over Otago in Invercargil.

Otago led 9-6 at half time and were 12-9 ahead until 12 minutes from time when the Southland captain Jamie McIntosh scored the only try of the match.

Southland will defend the Shield for the fourth time this season against Counties-Manukau next weekend.

Earlier Waikato beat Auckland 21-18 at Eden Park.

Both sides scored two tries and the score was level at 13-13 at half-time.

Waikato winger Dwayne Sweeny scored a try after the hooter to seal the match for the visitors.
