Moss Burmester has placed fourth in his 200 metre butterfly final, touching almost two seconds behind the bronze medalist.
The gold went to American Michael Phelps, taking his tally to four, with Laszlo Cseh of Hungary second, and Japan's Takeshi Matsuda third.
Burmester says he was disappointed to miss out on a medal, but was happy to secure a personal best.
He says going out early was in his game plan.
