Heavy rain has washed out play on the second day of the Champions tournament at the Sheshan International Golf Club, raising the prospect of the rich event spilling into next week.

Organisers had delayed the start of play in the second round several times before continuing rainfall forced the abandonment.

More rain and fog is forecast.

Swede Henrik Stenson led on seven-under-par after the first round with Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, who are battling it out for second place in the world rankings, among four players a stroke behind.

New Zealand's Mark Brown is one under and tied in 45th place.
