South Africa have beaten Australia in the second cricket Test at the MCG to post their first series victory in the country.

The Proteas reached 183 for one to win by nine wickets.

Hashim Amla hit the winning runs and finished 30 not out, while batting partner Neil McKenzie was unbeaten on 59.

Captain Graeme Smith again led the way, making 75 before being trapped lbw by Nathan Hauritz.

South Africa's win gives them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

This defeat is Australia's first series loss at home since they were beaten 2-1 by the West Indies in 1992-93.

South Africa can now aim to overtake Australia as the world's No.1 Test side in the third Test at the SCG, starting Saturday.
