Gloomy news for Melbourne Cup carnival

There's gloomy news on the eve of Derby Day in Melbourne with heavy rain forecast for Saturday's VRC Derby and wet weather set to last until Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

Up to a month's rain is forecast and the VRC's chief executive Dale Monteith says pre-race sales had ground to a halt since the forecast was announced.

Meanwhile the legendary Bart Cummings, who has saddled up 12 Melbourne Cup winners remains in hospital with a second bout of pneumonia, and might be too sick to be at Flemington on Tuesday.

And two leading jockeys, believed to be the brilliant youngster Blake Shinn, who rode Viewed to victory in the Melbourne Cup two years ago, and veteran Peter Robl, are being investigated for allegedly placing illegal bets on races.

A hearing is set for November the 8th, six days after the Melbourne Cup.
