Former national coaching director dies

John Howell, a former New Zealand Cricket national coaching director, has died in Tauranga after a short illness, aged 67.

As a medium pace bowler Howell played for Central Districts from 1966 to 1973, and he worked for New Zealand Cricket for 21 years until 2003.

He's survived by his wife Merline and sons Llorne and Glynn who also played first class cricket. Llorne played 12 one day internationals for New Zealand in 1998.
