12:07 pm on 8 January 2011

Australian cricket's day of infamy arrived early on the final day of the fifth Test in Sydney when England completed victory by an innings and 83 runs to conclude a 3-1 hiding in the Ashes series.

Rain interruptions frustrated England, but only briefly as the Australians resumed on 213 for seven and lost their last three wickets well before lunch.

Steve Smith (54) and Peter Siddle (43) made a brief fight of it but couldn't stop their side from being dismissed for 281 to lose by an innings for an unprecedented third time in the same series.

Pace bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Chris Tremlett were the most successful of England's bowlers with three wickets each.

Anderson's being rested for the Twenty20 series.
