Federer grateful for his millions

The defending Australian tennis Open champion Roger Federer was asked an unusual question by reporters about his massive earnings, after the world number two made the last 16 at the Melbourne tournament.

Federer joked that naturally he put his money in a Swiss bank, before getting serious and paying tribute to the players who came before him, who he says often played for the love of the game.

The 29-year-old says the current riches on offer only came about as a result of his predecessors' work and that's one reason he's aware of the history of tennis, and his charity work is genuine as he never expected to make so much money.

Federer has made over $80 million in prize money in his career to date and another considerable sum in appearance fees and endorsements.

He says he doesn't have a bad conscience and he likes to do what he can to give back.

Last weekend Federer was among the Open stars to stage a charity hitout for the Queensland flood victims which raised more than $2 million.
