Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic has claimed a place in the Australian Tennis Open quarter-finals with a three-set victory over Italy's Flavia Pennetta.

The 25th seed, won 3-6 6-3 6-3 and after a nervous opening set, eventually showed some of the form that had knocked out Australia's Sam Stosur in the previous round.

The victory put Kvitova into her second grand slam quarter-final following her career best performance at Wimbledon last year when she lost to the top seed and eventual winner Serena Williams in the semi-finals.

She'll play the third seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium or Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
