6:52 pm on 6 April 2011

The Sydney Roosters rugby league player Todd Carney's narrowly avoided a prison sentence for his latest drink-driving offence.

The club has also apologised on his behalf after he was late to court for his sentencing.

Rooster CEO Noyce says Carney was led to believe he could appear in court this afternoon but the time was changed.

Carney has a string of driving offences and has been given a six month suspended sentence, disqualified from driving for ten months and given a six-month good behaviour bond.

The magistrate warned Carney he was close to going to prison over the latest offence but he was being given another chance based on his good attitude.

Carney pleased guilty to the charge after he was pulled over for a random breath test in February.
