Black Sticks lose to Australia but make top four

The New Zealand men's hockey team will play for third at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament in Malaysia after being beaten 4-2 by Australia in their final pool match.

The Black Sticks had a chance to make the final if they'd beaten the world championships and other results had gone their way.

But the Australians led 4-0 after 28 minutes and that margin would have consigned the Black Sticks to the playoff for fifth and sixth.

But Steven Edwards and Marcus Child managed to score at the end of each half so they'll play Great Britain tonight while India will play South Korea for fifth.

Australia will play the Pakistan in the final, the Asian champions' cause helped by Korea's 3-1 defeat if Great Britain, who'd also been in the running for a finals berth.
