ICC launches dope probe

12:26 pm on 9 June 2011

The International Cricket Council has taking action against Sri Lanka's batsman Upul Tharanga after he failed a dope test.

Sri Lanka Cricket says Tharanga won't be selected, pending the ICC hearing's decision.

The opening batsman tested positive after he scored 30 when Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by five wickets in the World Cup semi-final in March.

Tharanga is the first Sri Lankan international player to fail a doping test and under ICC rules he can seek a test of his "B" sample.

The failed dope test follows allegations by a former skipper that Sri Lankan players have been involved in for match-fixing since 1992.

Sri Lanka Cricket says those claims are still being investigated.
