Pyeongchang bolts in for 2018 Winter Games

6:29 am on 7 July 2011

The South Korean city of Peongchang has won the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, scoring a crushing victory over Munich and Annecy of France.

The IOC President Jacques Rogge announced Pyeongchang's victory at the IOC's session in Durban after just one round of voting.

Pyeongchang polled 63 votes to 25 for Munich and a mere seven for Annecy, a totally unexpected margin of victory despite the South Korean's favouritism.

Pyeongchang was narrowly beaten in each of the last two Winter Olympic votes, losing out to Vancouver for the 2010 Games and to the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi for 2014.

It will be only the third time the Winter Games will have been held in Asia.
