Afoa's immediate future still in doubt

The World Cup hopes of the All Blacks prop John Afoa are still in the balance because of the fractured cheekbone he suffered in last weekend's match against the Springboks.

A specialist who examined Afoa yesterday said it had made good progress but the swelling in his face hasn't gone down completely, and although he doesn't require surgery at this stage, he'll be examined again early next week.

If surgery is required, Afoa would be out for up to six weeks, which would rule him out of the World Cup.
