The English golfer Nick Dougherty has emerged from the doldrums to be the surprise leader after the first round of the European Masters in Switzerland.

Dougherty at least temporarily ended a miserable two years with a spectacular 8-under par 63 at Crans-sur Sierre to lead by two strokes from a group of four players including Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer.

In his previous 20 tournaments this season, Dougherty hadn't made one cut.

The New Zealand pair Michael Campbell and Mark Brown made solid starts. Campbell's 67 has him tied for 8th and Brown had a 69.
