Phoenix grab a draw

The result was encouraging, but the quality was lacking as the Wellington Phoenix scraped home with a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United in their A-League football match at Eden Park.

A club record crowd of more than 20,000 watched the Phoenix struggle for the majority of the match until the introduction of Paul Ifill lifted the home side's performance, resulting in the equaliser thanks to an own goal.

Adelaide had taken the lead late in the first half.

It is Wellington's second straight draw which keeps them second to bottom in the standings with six points from seven matches.

Coach Ricki Herbert says the character his side showed to come back, as they did last week in Brisbane, was immense.

He says things haven't been going their way, and they haven't had much luck, but maybe that own-goal is just what they need to set them off on a run.
