Manchester City have suffered their first loss in the English football Premiership, going down 2-1 at Chelsea.

England midfielder Frank Lampard, seemingly out of favour with Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas, sealed Chelsea's victory and ended 10-man City's unbeaten start to the league season with an 83rd minute penalty.

Recalled striker Mario Balotelli put City 1-nil up inside two minutes, while Chelsea levelled 11 minutes before halftime through Raul Meireles.

City are now just two points in front of local rivals and reigning champions Manchester United at the top of the Premiership.

Chelsea's win moves them up into third place, seven points behind leaders City, and revives the London club's title bid.

City lost Gael Clichy in the 58th minute after a second yellow card.
