New Zealand number one golfer Danny Lee is off the pace in his first tournament on the PGA Tour in 2012.

The former World Number One amateur struggled on day one of the Sony Open in Hawaii with a two over 72 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

Lee made five bogeys and three birdies in his up and down start to life on the PGA Tour to be in a share of 102nd place heading into round two.

He is nine shots back from the leader Graham DeLaet of Canada who opened with a superb seven under 63.

Lee qualified for the world's most lucrative tour through finishing inside the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour in 2011 helped by his first win as a professional in Texas.
