Black Caps bolter unseen until Gisborne

The Otago all-rounder Sam Wells says he was pleasantly surprised to be added to the New Zealand cricket squad for the one-off test against Zimbabwe starting in Napier on Thursday after conceding the Black Caps selectors hadn't had many opportunities to watch him play.

Coach John Wright says the unheralded Wells impressed with knocks of 65 and five not out in the 3-day warm up match against Zimbabwe in Gisborne, and his skills with the ball will give good balance to the Black Caps attack.

Wells says he's not surprised to be considered a bolter as some of the selectors hadn't even seen him play before Gisborne.

The addition of Wells takes the squad up to the full complement of 13 players.
