50th anniversary of Snell's world mile record

11:27 am on 27 January 2012

Fifty years ago New Zealand Olympic champion Sir Peter Snell broke the world mile record at Cooks Garden in Whanganui.

Tonight an anniversary meet will be held at Cooks Gardens to mark the occasion and among those competing in the mile will be the Beijing Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis.

Even though Snell's record breaking effort of 3 minutes 54.4 seconds was 50 years ago, Willis doubts they will come close tonight although he expects to break four minutes.

The current mile record of 3 minutes 44.13 seconds was set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouji in 1999.
