Penalty snatches Super Rugby win for Hurricanes

9:07 am on 3 March 2012

First-five-eighth Beauden Barrett kicked his fifth penalty, a minute from time to give the Hurricanes a thrilling 30-28 Super Rugby victory over the Lions in Johannesburg this morning.

The Hurricanes began the second half 14-8 up and two tries within three minutes from hooker Dane Coles and All Blacks winger Cory Jane around the hour mark ultimately proved crucial.

Hurricanes skipper Conrad Smith said at that point he thought they had the points in the bag but says the Lions never gave up and is proud to lead a team that defeated them.

An angry Lions captain Josh Strauss said they let themselves down through silly mistakes.

Barrett kicked five penalties to raise his season tally to 36 points, one less than leading scorer Elton Jantjies.
