A trust that represents the interests of nine hapu in Wairarapa and southern Hawke's Bay will be working hard to start negotiations as soon as possible with the Crown over 27 Treaty claims.

Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tamaki Nui a Rua has received a mandate from members of the sub-tribes for the claims, planning for which began 16 years ago.

Project manager Robin Paratene says the claims were vigorously debated at 12 hui from Christchurch to Auckland, with one concern raised over and over again. The hui finished on Sunday.

Mr Paratene says many people are worried about the structure of the body that will manage and administer any Treaty settlements.

He says hapu want to see an organisation that ensures there is a trickle down effect of assets to all hapu, which has not occurred with other settlements.
