The new head of the national body which represents many kura kaupapa aims to have details of its own teaching guidelines added to the national education curriculum.
Toni Waho has replaced Rawiri Wright as the chairperson of Te Runanga Nui o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori o Aotearoa.
He was elected to the position late March at the organisation's annual meeting.
Mr Waho says one of his objectives is to build upon Mr Wright's good initiatives, in particular in relation to the education framework.
He is excited that the organisation is working with the Government to develop guidelines around how kura operate.
Toni Waho says it is the first time in 27 years of kura operating that a partnership has been formed between the national kura body and Government to look at a curriculum.
